13 BIOGRAPHY Marc Y. Donath is Professor and Head of the Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University Hospital of Basel. He was born in 1963 in Berne. After studying medicine and receiving his doctor­ ate in medical research from the University of Zurich in 1990, he went on to work at locations such as ETH Zurich and Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem (Israel). In 1998 he was awarded the title of SMA (Swiss Medical Association) specialist in internal medicine and ­endocrinology/diabetes. From 1999 to 2004 he held a medical research position financed by the Professor Dr Max Cloëtta Foundation. He com- pleted his habilitation thesis at the University of Zurich in 2002, and was subsequently awarded a SNSF professorship. From 2003 to 2009 he was SNSF professor at the University of Zurich and attending physician at the ­Division of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Clinical Nutrition at ­University Hospital Zurich. Marc Donath has received numerous awards for his research, including the research prize of the Swiss Diabetes Foun- dation in 2002 and the Novartis Prize in Diabetes in 2008. His research focuses on the mechanisms of type 2 diabetes (adult-onset diabetes), for which he has developed a sensational new therapy. His ­assumption is that this most common type of diabetes is attributable to a form of inflammation of insulin-producing cells, which has opened up new perspectives in the therapy of type 2 diabetes. He is a father of three children.
