Dr. Antoine Cloëtta

Founder

The founder of the Prof. Dr. Max Cloëtta Foundation, Dr. Antoine Cloëtta, was born in Zurich on September 10, 1902, as the son of Prof. Dr. Max Cloëtta and Lucy Cloëtta-Spoendlin.
The activities of his ancestors had a formative influence on him, so that medical science also became a great concern for him. After completing all the schools up to the Matura in Zurich, he turned to medical and economic studies at the Universities of Zurich and Geneva, graduating in 1928 with the Dr ès sciences économiques in Geneva. He then began his professional career at Hoffmann-La Roche. He worked for this company for almost three decades in Switzerland and in some European countries and abroad. He held management positions at the parent company and at foreign subsidiaries. In the turbulent times before, during and after the Second World War, Dr. Antoine Cloëtta played a decisive role in building up a worldwide organization. In addition to his professional activities, which were increasingly focused on organization and marketing, he always had a great interest in pharmaceutical and medical research, to which he devoted himself increasingly through studies after his retirement from active professional life.

After a richly fulfilled life, Dr. Antoine Cloëtta passed away on August 14, 1978. His personality was characterized by kindness, generosity, varied interests and manifold knowledge.
